Pink and red Celosia shade the little fairy in the heat of our backyard today - it's 98 degrees as we finish off the summer and turn toward autumn. The Greek word kelos, meaning burned, is the root of this flower's name since it looks like flames.
Everything is beginning to fade in our backyard.
The Hydrangea are smaller and browning.
The ferns sway in the warm breeze and the soil looks dry despite the sprinklers being on earlier in the day.
The dwarf Meyer Lemon tree is budding and putting forth tiny fruit - it isn't bothered by the heat.
By all these lovely tokens,
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And Autumns best of cheer.

Of course the succulents, like our Bear Paws, are quite content with the constant sunshine.
As for me, I wouldn't mind a little less sunshine
and a little more Fall.

Hello dear friend...we had another HOT day here too-95! I am ready for fall and cooler temps. I enjoyed your pix. I was thinking of you this morning. I picked up a few things for my fairy garden for fall. My friend is coming to visit and my fairy garden is still doing well, so wanted to change it up just a bit.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to be in touch with you again.
Happy September to you too.
it's still hot here in west texas, too. a little rainy and cloudy the last 3 days and, boy, we love it.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so glad you joined in to Seasonal Celebrations...a perfect post to celebrate fall...it was 92 here Friday and now 72. I love the change that has happened and here comes fall!!
ReplyDeleteIt finally cooled down here, hope it does for you too. Your photos are beautiful! Stop on over at my blog, I'm having a giveaway. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll try to send a cool breeze your way, it was only 48F this morning and I saw...frost on the grass! It's a good thing you have plants that like it hot and hopefully your little fairy was able to stay cool.
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking to Mosaic Monday.
It's hot and sunny here, too, but I know the rain and cold will come soon enough, so I'm enjoying all the sunshine. The nights cool down here to make sleeping pleasant. Beautiful photos of late summer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful garden you have! We had a few hot days last week and then boom--it was cool and in the 50's! It went back to the 80's again this weekend, and I have to say I enjoyed getting some warmth back. This winter is predicted to be a bad one because of of a El Nino pattern.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of your late summer California garden! I know that California and Crete, where I live, share similar climates, and your images represent this, as autumn is nowhere in sight in my neck of the olive groves, as we're thick in the middle of yet another heatwave.
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Mosaic Monday,
Poppy
Hot and humid here, too. We did have rain yesterday so that "cooled" things off for awhile and I won't have to water today. Love your fairy garden and the succulents are wonderful. I love succulents and need to figure out where to put them so that they don't get too much water! Lovely images! Happy Mosaic Monday!
ReplyDeleteHi Shawn,
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful mosaics! I'm still hanging on to my Summer because ours was very short this year. We shared the same poem and I love the fairy garden. I'm visiting from Judith's party today and have a lovely week.
Blessings,
Sandi
Beautiful reminder that summer came with a punch but it looks like it will soon be gone, our Pacific Northwest is cloud covered today after two days of 80-degrees plus!
ReplyDeleteLove your vignette, and love your succulent. I'm with you - bring on the cooler days!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a hot summer here too and humid. But here in the midwest we can feel Fall coming so I'll send some your way! Beautiful shots of your flowers...
ReplyDeleteWhat a restful post. Thanks for the calming moment. We've had a respite from the heat and drought with two days of rain for part of each of those days. Blessings,
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! We need fall and rain. Your yard does look beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely yard with us. Have a great week. Blessings, Martha
ReplyDeleteYour garden is lovely! My dwarf Meyer lemon tree produced one lemon two years ago and nothing since. :(
ReplyDeleteLovely garden post, Shawn! What a treat for you to give us a tour. I loved your photos the most!
