Like today...he set the plants we recently purchased, a trowel, a kneeling pad with gloves and some mulch out near the front planter. All I had to do was go outside and get the plants into the soil! Did I mention he's the best? There is a birdbath in the center of the front planter where I was working today. The planter is near the entrance of our home, and we like to keep it blooming and welcoming. I planted some Lobelia in front because it is low growing.
There are three Carnation plants already established and they grow to about ten inches tall, but the neighborhood rabbits won't stop nibbling the blossoms, so they are devoid of flowers just now....except for the few blooms too tall for bunnies to reach!lol~
I also planted Coneflower (echinacea purpurea). It is such a pretty shade of pink and I love how its petals bend back.
The information tag that was stuck in the pot with the Coneflower says it is deer resistant...we have no deer, but I hope it is bunny resistant!
Next, I planted an Arizona Sun Blanket Flower (Gaillardia). It is an unusual new perrenial with striking pink, red & yellow flowers. It is supposed to be easy to grow, drought tolerant and attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Look at that rich pink color! When I finished planting, I noticed a little lizard on the low wall watching me. He did not run away!
In fact, he studied me and proceeded to come closer. He climbed down the wall, hopped onto the soil and trotted just 10 inches from my knees... I was still kneeling, then he cocked his head to look up at me like dogs do when they are curious!! I was amazed! After a brief look at me, he ran across the soil and back up the wall into the sun.

Oh, Shawn! You have me actually thinking I might be able to do what you've done and not suffer the slow, mournful deaths I have in the past of most anything I put in the ground! I've been so reticent to actually purchase potted flowers for re-planting because I've never done well with that. My wildflowers have encouraged me these past two years - and I've been learning so much in the last few months from all the gardeners blogging that I just may try again. I'd like to have mums in the ground this year. Perhaps if I purchase and plant now - I usually get nice ones in the pot, put them on the porch, and watch them die within two weeks. :(
ReplyDeleteNow, as to Superman husbands - mine is a treasure - as I type - hoping the excedrin rids me of my morning migraine from a heavy labor purge this week - he is taking all the boxes and furniture for the yard sale onto the front yard - not even 6am! What a lot of stuff! Ruminations on how the sale goes this morning in my next post.
Love ya!
Kathy
What a lovely flower bed and hubby! I think you have a new pet, the lizard.
ReplyDeleteSo loving what you are doing in your garden! The lizard was probably hoping that you would dig up a few crickets for him! Have a lovely Saturday!
ReplyDeleteAnd a beautiful autobiography it is!
ReplyDeleteYour DH sound like a definite keeper! I also share life with a very thoughtful & loving husband. They sure make life even sweeter ;)
ReplyDeleteYour gardening, hubby and the little lizzy are very awesome! tyfs
Cheers,
Lisa
thanks for sharing your pretty garden
ReplyDeleteShawn, great story, beautiful garden and your hubby is a sweetheart! Some of my coneflowers have been eaten by bunnies! But they are my favorite, so I just deal with it! I have blanket flower too, and the bunnies leave that alone! TFS!
ReplyDeleteShawn, your husband does sound like a treasure. I'm surprised that as far apart as we live we can grown nearly the same things in our flower gardens (except for the lizard). Thank you so much for telling your friends about my Lemonade in the Snow post on Pink Saturday.
ReplyDeleteMiss Char...
Awwwww....a garden tended by love :) Beautiful photos, Shawn!
ReplyDeleteI really like your flower photos and the fact you promote reading on your blog.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quote that is... and distressingly true! Haha Love your new sun blanket flowers! and your lizard story. We are always futilely (sp?) trying to rescue them from the cats!
