Traditions~

Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.
William A. Ward~

I love to hear how people celebrate the New Year~ I grew up with few traditions, so I created or adopted many of my own when I married. New ones crept in after we became parents, and I find that I look forward to them and enjoy them.
Do you cook Black Eyed Peas? My dear friend from Texas does!

                             Or make home-made Menudo?

Do you throw buckets of water out the window like they do in     Puerto Rico? This cleans out the 'old' from the house!
People in Ecuador burn photos or effigies. In Denmark they throw dishes at the front doors of their friends. In Chile, people go to late night Mass then visit a graveyard.
One year, when our daughter was about 3 or 4 years old, we watched a Sesame Street television special about New Year traditions around the world.  They showed people from Spain and Portugal eating 12 grapes on New Years Eve...one for every month in the New Year.

And my sweet little girl wanted to eat grapes! So every year since then we eat 12 grapes and make a silent wish as we pop each one into our mouths~ It is a yummy and healthy tradition!

I made a card with my new Cuttlebug (Christmas gift!). I also used my new Lisa Pace Antiquated stamps (which I won!)~

  • Sizzix postcard folder
  • BoBunny cardstock
  • button, heart charm
  • Distress Vintage Photo ink
  • Pink Persimmon vintage bottle and advert stamps
  • Marvy scallop punch

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

  1. Your card is great and I love the part about the 12 grapes and the William Ward quote. My mother's Dad (he had dark hair) was asked to go around his neighborhood on Jan 1 morning and be the first to enter each house. It was called "First Footing" and the theory was if a dark haired man was the first to enter your house in the new year you would have good luck all year.........

  2. So lovely! I just bought this embossing folder just because of the musical note one. I was wondering about this one, how it will look on the card but after seeing yours, can not wait to use it.
Thanks so much for playing along with us in Sentimental Sundays Challenge.

Thanks for posting about how the New Year is celebrated in other countries! They are all very interesting. I think it is wonderful that you and your daughter made new traditions for yourselves and can share something very special. You both probably look forward to it every year...
I'm going to have to check in to the Cuttlebug. I haven't heard of it before.
I wish you many blessings in the New Year!

  8. The New Year's tradition I grew up with in the South was to have a meal of black-eyed peas, greens and cornbread. I've carried that tradition over into my own family. ;)

Thanks for being a part of Time Travel Thursday last year. I hope you'll continue to join the fun in 2012!

    Happy New Year!
