Down Home

Today Mr. Handyman and I stopped at Zito's Pizza  for lunch before exploring another antique shop in Old Town Orange. See this post for the last shop we explored.

We shared a fresh spinach and black olive calzone. Luckily I remembered to take a photo before we gobbled it up - it was so delicious! There was fabulous marinara sauce for dipping, too.

Hand in hand we headed next to Peggy and Don Arbenz's Down Home American Country Antiques.

                      Let's go inside!

Right off the bat you see this handsome canoe standing on end. A quick glance around and you notice that there are not as many knick-knacks as other antique stores; this shop stands apart by offering unique pieces and larger items. There is something for everyone. Any dolly would love this cute yellow house!

I was drawn to what I initially thought was a desk but, when I lifted the hinged lid, I was surprised to see a tin wash bowl fitted into a circular cut out. The piece was actually a vanity. It would look so charming in a bathroom or bedroom! I forgot to snap a photo.

Tools and blankets, snow shoes and fishing rods -

Cabinets, crockery, old boots and mirrors -

Oh, this was one of my favorite items! This coal scuttle was so wonderful. I loved the elegant twisted handle on the scoop and scuttle. If College Girl was through with school this would have gone home with us. I remembered our budget, admired the scuttle and kept walking.

I turned around and spied this scene - temptation all around! Love the old stove and Windsor chair.

There's more to see. What's next? Quilts and baskets

Do you have a favorite antique 'weakness?'

I love old furniture, quilts, toys and dishes -

I also like old teacups, typewriters, and hand stitched samplers. Doesn't this cup have sweet delicate colors?

It has a yellow rim and a pink handle. It would be perfect for sipping a cup of Upton's Keemun while reading a chapter or two on this lounge chair -

The Red Work and braided rug are charming -

Shaker boxes, large jars and pottery make great storage containers -

I'd love a corner cupboard! A teacup collection would look wonderful inside. For that matter, so would dishes, books, old cameras, linens, or dolls.

Happy to have you along. Did you see something you liked? We also visited another store called Heavenly Hostess that I will share another time.

  2. What a fantastic antique store ! I am drooling over those baskets and that old framed photograph on the wall. My weaknesses are many I am afraid. Lace would have to top my 'must have' list followed closely by antique greeting cards and china in any form. Did I mention gloves and vintage fabrics as well.....the list goes on...lol
    Great post !

  7. What a fun afternoon, wish there were places like that around here, except for the antique shops and regular home stores..I'm not complaining, but this kind are such fun too, as I have a total weakness for antiques! Loving the calzone, great shots! Thanks for your sweet and kind visit. Have a happy week.

  8. What an incredibly wonderful shop! I could spend hours exploring every nook and cranny! What fun...and, oh, what restraint I would have to use! I'm so glad you were able to share your delightful photos, Shawn. There are so many unique treasures to look at...and, so many great ideas to inspire!
You asked what things I am most fond of in antique shops...Old Textiles...linens, buttons, lace and quilts are at the top of my list!

Oh, that Calzone...My mouth is watering! It has been so long since I have had Italian food of any kind. We had a favorite brick oven cafe in San Diego that we used to take our boys to. Their Calzone was marvelous and we always needed to share because it was so huge!

Thank you for this charming post, my sweet friend. I enjoyed it soooo much!

And, oh, you made me laugh with your "Bate's Motel" comment on "When Pigs Fly"!
I had so much fun putting that silly post together...and, yes, the "No Tress..passing" sign did set a bit of an "Alfred Hitchcock" tone.

    Have a sweet week, Shawn!

  9. Hi Shawn,
you both had a great time, I think. The calzone looks delicious. Wwhat a wonderful tour through this store. I see a lot of nice things. I remember a vanity table like you described. We had it in my parents kitchen when I was very little. My mother cleaned the dishes in that bowls. Later we had a modern kitchen but I never forget this table.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  10. I would love to visit a shop like that. There are so many interesting things to explore. But with two toddlers, going to an antique shop would be a disaster.

  15. What a great place! Oh that lounger made me sigh. I just saw one at a shop that I wanted so badly. When she told me $250 I decided to pass. I have a weakness for architetural pieces (like pillars, moldings, door, and windows) also love furniture and dishes. Thanks for sharing this unique shop.
    Hugs,

  17. This post made me homesick. I so miss Orange and this sure looks like Orange, CA. WE moved to Phoenix 15 years ago and I still miss Orange. Can you say Street fair? It really took me back. Thanks.............Donna
