California Dew

Who Likes The Rain?

“I,” said the duck. “I call it fun,
For I have my red rubbers on;
They make a little three-toed track,
In the soft, cool mud, - quack! quack!”

“I!” cried the dandelion. “I!
My roots are thirsty, my buds are dry.”
And she lifted a tousled yellow head
Out of her green and grassy bed.

“I hope ‘twill pour! I hope ‘twill pour!”
Purred the tree-toad at the gray bark door,
“For, with a broad leaf for a roof,
I am perfectly waterproof.”
Clara Doty Bates

We are expecting some 'California Dew' today and I'm looking forward to it. Every time it rains my favorite Gene Kelly movie scene comes to mind. I wish I could tap dance and twirl an umbrella up and down the sidewalk like he did! I love rainy days. I love the sound and smell of rain, the quiet that sets in through the neighborhood when a good downpour begins, the charcoal clouds wafting across the sky, and the comforting hot cup of soup or tea I have after being out of doors.

The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.
  Robert L. Stevenson

  1. OH I love this poem and that quote! I'm always looking for 'seasonal quotes' so I'll be sure to save these. Here in the Midwest we are dying for warm temps -- we STILL have piles of snow in the parking lots. Don't you wish we could 'distribute' the weather wealth so no one has too much or too little??

  2. It's summa-summa-SUMMA time here in Manila, but I had a lovely breeze to refresh me on my walk today!

Hey, did you happen to see my Mail Kalikimaka pix the other day, hm?? *smile*

    Hugs to you, Duckie!

  3. Love the poems and Singing in the Rain. I, too, love rainy days, good for the grass and flowers, and nice for tea inside. Shawn, I ate 1/2 the chocolate bar you sent me today. Delicious!

  5. I like the charming R.L.Stevenson poem and the Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain scene is so joyful. We've had a lovely warm day today, although this evening there's a damp mist in the air. I'm glad rain is welcome at the moment where you live.

  7. Hi, Shawn!

I don't know if you'll remember me. A few years ago, I would frequently stop by your blog for inspiration. Then I started fighting cancer. On this gray, rainy Michigan day, it warms my heart to see your blog is still beautiful and inspirational. Any day that I'm able to play with ink and/or stamps, you are one whose fondly comes to mind.

Enjoy today! I think I shall quietly read.
