Just Plug It In~

My cup today is part of a set that belonged to Handyman's grandmother. It has white roses around the saucer rim and one inside the teacup. I can picture Grandma Alice sitting down to breakfast with these sweet cups.

Well, who'd a thunk it?! I am a creature of habit and I usually stick with the tried and true. I've been using a whistling stove-top kettle for 20 years. Had my eye on a British Simplex, but with a kid in college it is not in the budget. When our latest kettle's knob broke off for the second time, I shopped around at my usual thrifty haunts - TJMax, Home Goods and Tuesday Morning - for a handsome whistling kettle under $70 to no avail. The size, color, handle placement, ease of filling, or some other problem existed with all kettles I found. So, I did a bit of online browsing for a replacement kettle  and I saw a variety of electric kettlesHmm. I read reviews. I checked customer satisfaction. I looked at Consumer Reports. I came to the conclusion that an electric kettle has several features my old stove top version did not have. The feature I was particularly interested in was the auto shut-off and boil dry prevention. That is an idea I can get behind! The stove-top kettle takes so long to boil water that I would put it on the fire, go upstairs to finish getting ready for the day, then come back downstairs to make a pot of tea.

Ta da! We decided to give it a chance - who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks? I selected a kettle with the least amount of plastic (the plastic it has is BPA free), made with German Schott glass so I can see if it needs to be cleaned, and turns itself off once the water reaches a boil. It also has a filter in the spout. Now, there are fancier models with timers and temperature control but we are all happy as can be with this simpler kettle.

It heats water in much less time than the microwave or stove! I love watching the bubbles swirl.

Would you like one of our home-made Anise Cookies drizzled in icing to go with your tea?

Anyone else use an electric kettle?

  3. What pretty china! So glad you have such a nice family set. I can live without a lot of things in our house, but our electric kettle is NOT one of them! As a 1st gen Yank from a Brit family married to a Brit we have grown up with them and have always had them. It's on the go most of the day and a major catastrophe when one dies....luckily that doesn't happen often! Enjoy yours...you will love it! Thanks for linking to Tuesday Cuppa Tea!

  7. Hello Shaun, I really love your Cameo Rose cup and saucer. That is a lovely pattern! I don't think I have ever seen it before.
Your new kettle is pretty with all the swirling bubbling water...kinda like a lava lamp on caffeine! lol! It sounds like a really handy product.
I too have been looking for a kettle, but haven't found what I want yet. My old faithful just blew a hole, literally! Thank you for sharing your search with us, it might shorten my look : )

  9. Hi Shawn,
A very pretty teacup; love green and white! I am using an elecric kettle right now. The kettle we had before our current one was almost identical to your new glass one. Hope it works out for you. Thanks for coming to tea.

  11. Oh!..that teacup and saucer is to die for!! Very special with all that green! The electric kettle is terrific, my mom has one from several years ago, like all her things, lol...I should acquire one, I always liked them, because they're ready to serve! 12. Hi Shawn,
yes, I agree. I also use an stove top kettle and it lasts ages until the water boils. An electric kettle is much faster. It is not the money but the place to stand it. Another item to stand around. Anyway, my next kettle is an electric one. Yours look really good. And the tea cup of Handyman's Grandma looks beautiful. Really nice design. Your cookies sound tempting and look like modern artwork. You should frame them. Would be a pitty to eat them.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  15. Love those little delicate rose buds! Very pretty and goes so well with those delicious looking sweet treats! When I was younger, I only drank tea and then became a coffee girl! That kettle looks quite cool or hot! Thank you for visiting me and I hope you are having a great week!

  16. I love our electric kettle! The only thing I would change about it is that it doesn't have a whistle, so if I leave the room while the water's heating, sometimes I forget I was making tea for someone.

  19. Hi Shawn. Well I have used an electric kettle for almost the entire time I have been married..37 years! And I am only on the 2nd one in all of those years. It was my English mother-in-law that introduced this Yankee to tea..though I am still mainly a coffee drinker...and the electric kettle. I know that it saved many a forgotten and boiled dry kettle mishaps! Hugs,
