A Book for Me, A Book for You~

I love books and am saddened that our local Borders closed their doors recently. College Girl and I spent many an afternoon there after school. She worked on her homework and then enjoyed looking through the children's section. She would frequently go home with a new treasure tucked under her arm. Now the closest place to purchase books is Costco or Target, but it is not the same. They only carry the newest editions and, of course, there is no place to sit and look through several in order to make a choice. We visit the library occasionally, but more and more often we are turning to the internet for books. One of my favorite 'books by post' source is Bas Bleu. Never heard of it? Here is a bit from their site:

Bas Bleu, Inc. produces a catalog of books and bookish things. We started our company in 1994 and mailed 50,000 copies of our first edition. Now, we mail a million copies five times a year to avid readers all over the country. We read the books and write the reviews right here —but we’re a retailer, not a publisher.

  • Our selections are eclectic — and rarely do any of them appear on bestseller lists.
  • Our fiction recommendations — some of them classics you may have missed — are not to be found in racks at the supermarket or airport shop.
  • Our travel books offer more than lists of hotels and restaurants; they’re the stories of gifted writers.
  • Our books for children celebrate imagination and humor rather than cautionary tales.
We sort through thousands of new offerings from publishers to find those books that offer some combination of cleverness, wisdom, imagination, and joy.

BOOK CLOSEOUTS

One of my other favorite online sources is Book Closeouts  where I often find wonderful deals on great books. You never know what they'll have! They have a scratch and dent section  where slightly damaged books are offered at even greater discounts too. I have fun putting names of books or authors in their search box and finding they have just the book I want at a discounted price. For example, I put 'tea' in the search box and found there were 190 selections available today.  Below are two of the fun tea books available, and they also occasionally offer tea stationary and cards~

BOOK CLOSEOUTS

Speaking of cards, I made one this afternoon using a Page Maps  card map. Tucked inside is a birthday wish and a Barnes and Noble gift card for my bibliophile friend.

JUNE PAGE MAP~ CARD MAPS 2012

I used:

  • Colorbok paper
  • K&Co Brenda Walton purse sticker
  • yellow bakery twine
  • Martha Stewart edge punch
  • pink gem and cupcake sticker on the purse

  3. Shawn!!!!! I absolutely LOVE your post! I am with you, girl! Our local Borders store closed - there was a used book store in it's place for awhile, but it recently closed, too. We have a Barnes and Noble, but it's not the same! I used to love spending hours going through the store, but now at least 1/2 of the store is about the Nook, and 1/4 of it has CD's and movies!!!!! That leaves only 1/4 for REAL books!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing your online sites with us! I am definitely going to check them out.

  4. I learned so much this morning---thanks for the book links, the Page Map (I think I'll use this one too) and a challenge site that is new to me. Your card is beautiful. I love your choice of papers and embellishments.

  5. YES!!! I know Bas Bleu - a very interesting catalog I get to peruse while sipping tea in my reading corner. Eclectic is quite the word for the book selections. Too interesting.

As to your Borders being gone - do not despair. This happened to us in our region, too - well, all over since they are kaput. But, in their place BAM - Books a Million - has set up shop, so we can still go to the same big box storefront and enjoy books and cafe at a BAM store. Actually, was wanting to go today with husband. We're real swingers - date nights in bookstores.

What can you expect from a career bookseller - never gets enough!

    Joy!

  6. Hello lovely Shawn, so nice to see you stop by. Your card is absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors you used. It reminds me of my room as a teenager. I had it decorated in pinks and yellows. It's such a cheerful combination.
Sorry to hear about Borders, BUT there's always The Shop Around the Corner. ;)
    Always fun visiting with you.
    Enjoy your Sunday, love.
    MUAH!

  7. Thank you for the excellent book links! I also am saddened by the loss of many of my favorite locations of Borders and Barnes and Noble in NYC. One of my favorite Borders sat right in the shadow of the Twin Towers and I would often sit in a window seat or in their cafe and wait for my husband to leave work (he worked in Tower 7). I can close my eyes and still see every nook and cranny of that store...sigh I will check out both of your recommendations.

    Your purse card is lovely!

  8. Books are so cool and so much FUN! I love books to, lately I've bought a new/re printed book of the old fashioned Alice in Wonderland Book, with an amazing book cover. I am reading it now, but I am very busy so it will take some time.
Always love to read your blog!!

  9. We are lucky to have a Barnes & Noble very close and enjoy a visit there. It has a Starbucks so we can grab a book or magazine and really take a look with a coffee. Love what you made. You are ever so talented.

  12. Came over from Overflowing. My niece introduced me to Bas Bleu a couple of years ago. I love to read the catalogs. I live in a small town and we have a BAM, but also several small independently owned bookstores. It is nice just to sit and read in a store! Loved your card!
