Inspired by Iris

Standing in the kitchen this morning, half awake and waiting for the kettle to boil, I glanced outside to see which birds were enjoying the feeder. Then I noticed that six deep purple buds on the Iris had opened!

Named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris indeed comes in a rainbow of colors and in many heights. All have the classic, impossibly intricate flowers. The flowers are constructed with three upright "standard" petals and three drooping "fall" petals, which are often different colors.

This faithful Iris, planted in front of our Bay tree, has bloomed year after year. And with each sucessive year there are more blooms. I've never cut one to enjoy inside because I wanted them to last as long as possible. But with six blooming all at once, I decided to treat my family to it's beauty and place one in a crystal vase.

Do you talk to objects sometimes? I couldn't help but murmur, "you sure are pretty!" as I gazed at the Iris. Inspired by the cutting, I knew the perfect teacup from which to sip my morning cuppa. It is covered in lovely shades of lavender and lilac.

After a sip or two of my Kusmi Troika tea it was easy to see the charming cluster of flowers decorating the inside rim.

I'd love an Iris ball gown if I were a fairy, wouldn't you?

Tea, an Iris and a few pages of Shakespeare to start my day.

  1. What a perfect way to start your morning! Tea, china, beautiful flowers and Shakespeare! You know how to treat yourself well. Yay!
Your tea cup is delicate and sweet. I think I may have two Royal Patricians. I don't see them that often.
Thank you so much for sharing with us.
    Hugs,

  4. How lovely is your tea cup vignette. I love irises and their smell. I miss not being able to grow them here in Florida. I think there is something special about lavender/purple - it just makes your smile.
    Have a wonderful week,

  5. Oh, how lovely, Shawn! Your iris and teacup look so pretty together. Love your pretty collage!

I remember as a young girl walking behind my auntie's house in the early springtime and in the woods, there would be myriads of irises. Surrounded by fresh air, beautiful lacy trees and purple iries, I felt like I had stepped into a little piece of heaven. It was so tranquil and beautiful! Thanks for the memory and for coming to tea.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  9. We must be soul sisters today because purple "spoke" to me today too for my post.

Your Iris is gorgeous and I am very glad you took one inside to enjoy in the evenings as well when the blinds are closed and curtains are drawn shutting the other 5 out to your eyes.

    Lovely blossom!

  10. So pretty! I love irises very much. Oh, I just saved a whole bunch of them from the demolition crew at a neighbourhood rebuild. I have no idea what colour they will be and can't wait for them to bloom. There's nothing like this beautiful iris purple anywhere else in the world, is there? I hope you have a wonderful, purple week. :)

  11. Pretty teacup Shawn and I love your purple Iris. My large bearded Iris have already bloomed and I've tried growing ones like yours but all I got were the leaves and nothing more.
    Have a lovely day~Clara

  13. Being a fairy is probably not all that it's cracked up to be. In the summer you would have to constantly have to be fighting off the mosquitoes! I am sure, though, that an Iris Ball Gown would make fairy life "the cat's meow !!!" Lovely post Shawn!
